FOR YOU DAD
The right words seem to fail me,
I’m not sure where to start,
It’s not really a life story,
But a poem from the heart.
*
AJ was really quite a lad,
Full of cheek, a scallywag,
And a most upstanding citizen,
But to me he was just Dad.
*
He and Mum were a great match,
But some stuff got in the way,
They put in the work that was needed,
They were together then to stay.
*
They loved each other with a passion,
Rarely seen today,
Lifelong mates they’d be,
Their love would never sway.
*
They raised four kids to adulthood,
With care and love always,
And we turned out not too bad,
At least I did anyway (hehe)
*
Our Dad also loved a joke,
He had some great one liners,
He had a cheeky streak for sure,
No sense of humour was finer.
*
But when it came to raising us,
He often would dictate,
“Remember your responsibilities”,
Was what he said to set us straight.
*
He loved my Mum so much,
He sat me down to say,
“Look to her for inspiration,
Be just like her one day”.
*
Now I am not my Mum,
I have made my own way,
But I know that he was proud of me,
He told me so one day.
*
He was so very proud of all of us,
Each and everyone,
He’d say to Mum in later years,
“Just look what we have done”.
*
I’d say to him at this remark,
Of course you’ve great family,
Look what stock we came from,
He’d confess, “I must agree”.
*
Dad believed in no god,
When you’re dead, you’re gone,
But he did believe, in all of us,
His spirit will live on.
*
So let’s honour him in all of us,
Everyone he touched,
Let’s never let his spirit fade,
To do so would be unjust.
*
Let’s take his great example,
Live life the best we can,
For he had done exactly that,
My Dad, was quite a man.
