Most people in this world start each day with intention, but sometimes, it’s difficult to live your life with intention when it can feel totally out of control. Having little time to stop and think intentionally doesn’t help at all.
Sometimes it feels like I am on autopilot, and some weeks are just a blur by the time I reach the weekend. This can be frightening, as I can see my life rattling down a huge hill like an out of control train and I have no idea how to regain control, where the brakes are or how I can possibly continue at this pace and survive. Wow, is this even my train, my life?
“Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.” – John Allen Paulos
Broadly speaking, I believe, control is an illusion. And coming to terms with that is important in enjoying the crazy train ride that is our life. There will always be days when everything feels out of control.
You can be as organised as clockwork and then one little unexpected event can throw you off your tracks.
Try these tricks for accepting life with all it’s craziness:
- Be prepared to put aside the unimportant for the important. If you’re not sure what important is, stop and ask yourself that very question as if being asked by another and answer honestly
- Try not to constantly be thinking of all the things you have to do this week. Write down appointments and important things to do, put a reminder on your phone and then forget it. Take a few minutes each morning to see what must be done that day and then take one day at a time and one task at a time
- I know it’s a cliché but BREATH, consciously. In between each task, take a few moments to notice your breathe, the rise and fall of your chest and the beating of your heart
- Use mindfulness to stay in the moment and let any anxiety just sit there. Find out how here
- And remember, this too shall pass. Everything does.
